Here's what I suggest to new dog in a cat home...
I suggest there be a safe room for kitties...the ideal is to get a slip lock ... one that opens widely enough to allow
kitties through the door but not widely enough for dogs to get through. Just a suggestion..that way kitties always feel safe.
I suggest everyone get Emergency into the water supply every day..kitties and doggies....
Here is a little snip about Emergency...
Excellent for any emotional upset. It has a calming effect during a crisis. If a person needs specialised medical help,
this Essence will provide comfort until treatment is available. Administer this remedy every hour or more frequently if necessary,
until the person feels better.
I just pound the bottle five times on my palm and drop into the water supply.
The other suggestions are simple things you probably already know.
Place a towel over his bedding and one over where the kitties sleep and switch out. You can also rub a drop of vanilla
extract behind each animal's ear..just an old country thing, but cats like it if we all smell alike.
I would do the feeding in the evening with the three with a supervised baby gate...him eating on one side and the kitties
on the other...this one's kind of sniggly to try on your own with three animals. If you aren't completely confident with this
one, hold off. I still don't feed all of my dogs together, but as you know with Lee Mannix (as with most good dog trainers)
feeding time is an important training period.
Lastly, try leash dragging. I am a big one on having a squirt bottle or can with pennies in every room handy. I would
(during the first week or so) let him drag around the leash awhile..kind of inconvenient, but when we get busy and can't get
a quick response, there's no quicker remedy than being able to step on that leash for an attention grabber. I know some methods
will not agree with this sort of 'training', but I'd rather see a dog come around with a little 'knee jerk' work than have
a dog miss out on a great home with an issue that could have been avoided.
Mentioning this, one of my recent adoptions would have gone south had they not been determined to overcome her cat problem.
She'd done well in two foster homes with cats, but got to the new home and freaked out on their outdoor cat. If they hadn't
been so determined to make it work, she would have lost that home. I just got several wonderful beautiful photos of her today
with the family on vacation!
You know as well as I do, once the new starts to wear off as in any relationship, there might be a little behavior 'spikes'.
I don't believe you and G-Boy are going to encounter anything you can't handle, but it's always good to be prepared, as in
the squirt bottle.
I appreciate your being so open to all of these new age ideas...all of this is a learning curve for me. I wish I had been
privy to my own advice over the past. As I told you, I have put dogs down whom I know I would have been able to save if I'd
known about some of these tools.
