This is the story of Cubby and what happens when an animal is over-vaccinated...

Cubby
September 2002, Cubby was a little puppy on death row at San Francisco Animal Care and Control..turned down by the SFSPCA, he was saved by Reunion Rescue. Oh yeah, his name was Cupcake...

He had been vaccinated with DHLPP and Bordetella vaccine that July.

Upon release to our rescue, he was vaccinated for rabies.

We boarded Cubby at a local hospital where he was once again vaccinated for Bordetella.

He was fostered to be adopted by a young couple with two cats. He and his new family attended Reunion Rescue dog training and Cubby transitioned quite nicely into his new home.

2005

Reunion Rescue received a call from Cubby's guardian who was joining the San Francisco police force and wished to rehome Cubby. We picked Cubby up and brought him to our boarding facility where he joined other dogs both in day-boarding situations and other rescue dogs.

We knew Cubby was a great dog and began searching for a new home for him after our trainer had evaluated Cubby and authorized him ready for adoption.

Summer of 2005, Cubby was fostered to adopt by a single young man. Reunion Rescue sponsored Cubby's training lessons to transition smoothly into his new home.

The new adopter processed Cubby as a service dog and had him vaccinated again in July of 2005.

We found out that the first adopter had left Cubby at his sister's home due to familial issues. During that period, Cubby was attacked by the sister's dog.

2007

Although Reunion Rescue has moved operation back to Texas in response to imposed California breed specific legislation, we still operate our rescues in California and promise to rehome any of our adopted animals.

We got a call from Cubby's second and new guardian who wished to rehome Cubby due to aggressive behavior. When asked if he'd continued training, he could not remember the trainer's name he'd visited and who'd used questionable methods. He had also implemented some of the Dog Whisperer's techniques seen on tv.

We immediately began to suspect rabies vaccinosis and asked the guardian if Cubby had been over-vaccinated.

In July of 2007, Cubby had been vaccinated for the third time in his five year life!!!

We feel this is entirely too much vaccination, especially considering a 1600 pound horse receives two vaccines. This dog had received enough rabies vaccination for two and a half horses!

Cubby's Cure

October 18th: Cubby flies into DFW International Airport. I pick him up and we drive to Cubby's new home out on Lake Austin in the beautiful hill country of central Texas.

The next couple of days, Cubby is introduced to an all raw holistic diet. He immediately has gorgeous poops and very slowly, begins to acquaint himself with his new surroundings.

At first, Cubby is very scared of my husband, Scott. He backs up into the kennel and is afraid of Scott. I am worried that Cubby will only feel comfortable with me and fall into a rut of only trusting me.

The next week, we write up Cubby's questionnaire to send to his homeopathic practitioner who will cure Cubby of rabies vaccinosis.

Cubby, in the meantime, gets his own outside dog run with a dog house for his use during the daytime. At night, he is kenneled in the little house with two other rescue dogs. The other two dogs, Brownie Rose and Bullfrog, spend the evening hours chewing on their treats and bones and listening to soft rock from their crates. We are hoping that Cubby will soon relax begin chewing, too.

Our homeopathic practitioner tells us to quit giving Cubby the Bach Flower remedies we had been putting in his water to help him forget past experiences. Although Bach is a great supplement and something we regularly use, it will however, interfere with homeopathic treatment.

Cubby has begun to accompany my husband Scott to work during the day and now prefers Scott's company...Scott's his guy! My worries of Cubby only preferring me are over..he definitly prefers Scott to me now!!! I'm not even jealous.

November 1: Cubby's homeopath receives his completed questionnaire.

November 7: we receive Cubby's homeopathic remedy with complete instructions regarding how to administer.

November 8: already seeing a difference. Cubby's eyes are brighter and he is quite noticeably less fearful, more happy and at ease.

November 9: Cubby has a routine and system. He comes out of the crate and goes for a quick morning potty walk where he always eliminates right on time. Then, he chills in his run for awhile until it's time for work. He runs, RUNS, to hop into the truck to go to work with Scott. Before they leave, he has to show me his double tennis ball chew and his stuffed possum..every respectable Texas pit bull has a stuffed possum...

Lunchtime, they come home and Cubby gets to run at the lake for ball time..then a short nap..

Shift two, they're off again to work. I am suspicious that Cubby would really prefer living in the truck now...hmmmm..

Dinner is usually some ground chicken or turkey with veggies and organs, either chicken wings, necks, backs or turkey necks, some liver, maybe some ground beef with organs and ever once in awhile..some good old fashioned smelly ass green tripe..I'll admit, Cubby was a bit of a hard sell on this one, but eats it up like a champ now.

Cubby and the kid...

November 10: For the first time, Cubby chewed his rawhide inside his crate this evening. This was huge. For the entire time he's been here, he's had every bone or chew available to dog and will just let it sit there. It made me kind of sad, because he just didn't seem happy. He seemed like he was being just an obedient dog. I really felt like I'd let him down. When he tore into his rawhide and began to chew it like an old veteran, I teared up. I knew we were on the road to recovery.

November 12: I asked an animal communicator to speak with Cubby. I wanted him to know that he will never have to be rehomed again and that he is home with Scott and I. Even though it isn't a perfect home situation and he is crated with Brownie Rose and Bullfrog, this is his home.

November 13: The animal communicator has replied with Cubby's transcript. As I suspected, he is indeed worried that he might have to leave. He kept telling the communicator, "Cubby love Cindy" and things like "Cubby home. Cubby want to stay." He didn't mention Scott, but showed the ac a mental picture of himself running for a stick with a child by his side. He told her he loves the child very much. This was confusing to me until I realized he meant Scott! Scott is a very childlike person and I believe Cubby sees him as a playmate!

November 14: Gave Cubby his remedy as prescribed using the dilution and succussion method. As I said before, he has exhibited a noticeable change. Scott has mentioned he will go down and lie on the floorboard of the truck when they spend the day working together. This is something that homeopathic practitioners ask the caretaker to note. Any change in behavior is noted whether we think it seems important or not.

November 15: Cubby came out of his crate ready to rock and roll today! It was amazing to watch him run and play with Scott before they left for work. Cubby was running back and forth, doing donuts in the grass, so excited and so happy.
