Junior

juniormemorial.jpg
2001-2005

I met Junior at San Francisco Animal Care and Control in 2001. It was the beginning of the year and Diane Whipple had just been tragically killed. All of the pit bulls at SFACC were being routinely killed because nobody wanted to adopt them. Junior was captured on the streets of San Francisco with his sister. They killed her and Junior was put up for adoption.

Junior was an incredible dog. He had great issues with seperation anxiety and was trained for the four years we were lucky enough to know him. We created his own page, Junior's Page, on this website. During the past year with all of the politics surrounding San Francisco's breed specific SB861, the fear of pit bulls has been heightened once again. Good dogs like Junior are the ones who suffer.

On the morning of Sunday, September 29, 2005, Junior was tragically hit and killed by a car on Highway One. We believe that he was intentionally hit and killed as there were no other cars on the road that lonely
morning.

We took the animals we had left and moved from California to a place that has no breed specific legislation. Not a day goes by that I do not mourn the loss of this wonderful dog who did not deserve to die such a young death.

In the words of Ghandi, a society is defined by the way it treats its animals.

BAXTER

baxterincar.jpg

It was Sunday February 20, 2011 in Daly City, California. Kimberley was working her shift at PetSmart as a pet food sale representative. Her day was changed drastically when she saw a very skinny Pit Bull, Baxter known to some as Twix.

She quickly inquired to his story and found out that the owners had dropped this poor 6-month old off claiming he had been vomiting and just not eating very much. The vet explained that he was in kidney failure and was to be put down the next day. There was talk that maybe he got into a toxin, but the owner also had mentioned that he had been small since he was born and was never a big eater.

Baxter had been at the vet for several days, and they had been trying to reach the owners. At first the owners had been responding, but then stopped answering their phone. This poor puppy was abandoned, locked in a cold cage, and had little hope for survival if he stayed at the Vet. Kimberley’s pet loving instincts sprang into action.

She of course had been tearing up and was spotted by a caring couple who had been shopping. They came to hear the story, and they too began to cry. All three became devoted to try to help poor Baxter with even the slightest chance of living. When all three caring people made it home, they began calling everyone they could think of. They had reached out to many rescues including some devoted to Pitt Bulls.

At this point Kimberley remembered having a card from a Pit Bull rescue from over five years ago. She called and Cindy answered from Reunion Rescue. After Cindy inquired to his condition she was also now devoted to trying to save their newly found family member.

Sharon Curry of Bundocks Kennels in Sebastopol, California told Cindy to bring Baxter to Bundocks and the plan was hatched. Each and every day that Baxter was at the vets, a call was made to keep him alive. They let the vet know that somebody cared, and somebody was going to do something.

Now that we had a plan, we reached out to friends on the internet and asked for donations from other caring animal lovers. The wonderful people stepped up to help out. We raised over $700 in just three days. Tuesday night we went to Rainbow Grocery to stock up on some of the treatments that would be needed to bring him back to health.

On Wednesday February 23, Kimberley and Brent picked up Baxter at 3 p.m. to make the trek up to Sebastopol. He was wrapped in a blanket and he slept quietly on Kimberley’s lap the entire two hour drive.

We arrived at the Kennel just in time for closing. We spoke with Sharon for several minutes and surveyed the surroundings. You could tell he would be in good hands. We spoke with Cindy and sent all the funds we had raised up until then and she said she would be overnighting the additional medicine and treatments.

Thursday, we received news that Baxter had in fact eaten some chicken out of Sharon’s hands and seemed to have made a slight improvement. Sharon fed Baxter hamburger meatballs every hour from her hand. We had hope he was on his journey to recovery. Friday we got notice that he had made slight improvements each day. His medicine was in the mail and would arrive on Monday. Saturday was another day of hope as he had eaten a little more.

Sunday, I received an e-mail from Cindy asking that I call her as soon as I could. My heart sank as I dialed the number. My fears were confirmed when Cindy immediately said Baxter had passed. Sunday morning Baxter had thrown up, most likely a sign that his kidneys were too far deteriorated and his body had stopped digesting food. We had gotten to him too late. He died in Sharon’s arms.

We gave Baxter all the love we could find. So many people had grown attached to Baxter in such a short time. He was truly loved and he is missed every single day. His spirit will live on in us and the people who cared for him most will be forever connected.

Baxter I’m sorry your previous owners abandoned you. Baxter, I’m sorry we didn’t find you sooner. Baxter, we love you. Baxter, we miss you. Baxter, you will be with us forever.

Baxter had reached out in communication to Patti who helped save Benny and who writes Benny's blog. In fact, that's how his name was chosen. Baxter chose it for himself. He told Patti that he needed lots of snuggles. Patti didn't have to tell Kimberley about the snuggles. Kimberly just knew.

Kimberley and Brent made these lovely videos of Baxter that beautiful day they drove him to Bundocks. There must be some peace in knowing that in his last few days, Baxter had more love than he ever did in his short six months on this earth. He was a beautiful little soul and has brought a few of us humans together to recognize and realize we must learn from Baxter to make a change in the way we treat animals. Bless you, sweet little Baxter.

Tess

Tess was the beloved Belgian Malamute and the famous partner of Bob Gutierrez. Any of us who have benefitted from Bob's training at A Better Way Dog Training knew Tess. She was phenomenal and beyond a dog. Every one of Reunion's rescue dogs owes something to Tess. Bob is very broken right now without her and cannot really bear to think about her right now. Let's keep Bob and Tess in our thoughts until Bob feels comfortable enough to write something about Tess himself. Until then, Contessa is welcoming all of the beloved dogs entering heaven and showing them all how to mind their manners in her regal and motherly way.

God Bless Tess.

As of March 17th 2009 Frenchie was put to rest. After a long struggle with Lymphoma cancer it was her time. She will always be missed. Frenchie was one of the best dogs ive had. She loved people and loved life. She was with me through alot of good and bad times. She kept it real through everything. I will always love her and keep a special place for her in my heart. Frenchie RIP and remeber all dogs go to heaven. And you will always be missed. Well lets see my names frenchie. I was almost killed at ACC but i was saved by Cindy from Reunion Rescue. She gave me my great name. I now live with alan. He's a great owner i couldnt ask for better. Other than that i like sleeping mostly, chewing on bones, rollerblading, going to the beach, alot of other stuff too. I like playing with dogs but im very peticular about who they are. So if your ever in san francisco come see if you can hang with me and my dogs.

Frenchie was saved by Alan and loved more than life. When Alan met Frenchie that first day, he discovered she knew how to do so many tricks, including roll over...she was a beautiful clown. She would have been put to sleep without anyone ever knowing how smart she was had Alan not discovered her and given her a wonderful incredible loving home.

Vive la Frenchwoman....toujours et pour jamais.....

Smokey

1995-2003

Epitaph to Smokey, Our Wonder Dog

Smokey loved chewing and slobbering on his rubber ball when he was not chasing after it. He was a pro at rolling the ball with his tongue just far enough to stop dead an inch from your toe (this was how he greeted guests (to him, they were new playmates). Smokey was also an excellent swimmer. When hot, he'd simply jump in the pool or cool himself by lying on the top step of the pool, with his body fully submerged while his head rested on the edge. He had many quirky doganalities. But most importantly, he was truly a best friend who always knew when my husband and/or I were tense or in pain or simply needed a hug. He had a magical way of easing it all. He was our beloved furperson.

Rosie
1992 - 2005

I met Rosie at a very sad time in my life. I had just lost my best friend Sati to cancer.  I had been calling around to rescues looking for a friend when I recieved a picture of this beautiful 4yr. old blonde with a white star on her chest. She had been found running the streets of Richmond and saved from the kill shelter there. I just had to foster her. At first, it was a little strange. This little dog was so independent she probably could have fed herself. She didn't like to cuddle much or like to be smooched on, but she would endure it. After about a month I new she would never leave. She had such a quiet strong presense. She never made noise, but you always knew she was there. She was my little Rosiegirl, my Bunny, my Babydoll. She loved to swim. We had a pool in Calif. and this dog would lay in the sun then jump in the water. She would repeat this little ritual all day.  We would go camping in Big Sur where she would climb the cliffs and romp in the surf.  She didn't like other dogs. A total Alpha female so we did just about everything together and I was happy to spend as much time as possible with her. She was such a clown playing with her squeeky pink 'Old Navy' bone then dropping it at my feet and stealing it away when I would reach for it. Even though she wasn't very affectionate she loved her belly rubs. She would stay on her back as long as I would rub her. You were such a blessing to me. You will always be my Babygirl. I miss you!

Sati'
1986 - 1996

In early June of 1986 I decided it was time for another dog. I looked in the paper and there was an add for a free 2yr. old Rhodesian Ridgeback who had just had a litter of pups. I went to meet her and the owner put this huge 8 week old puppy in my arms. I told him that I wasn't really interested in a puppy but I couldn't put her down. She was a Pitbull Ridgeback mix. The most beautiful puppy I had ever seen. She was so smart everytime it was time to learn something new she would just do it. She was my angel and I know she was sent to save my life. She had many nicknames. Wally, Baboo, Honey Bear, and Dog Star which is what Sati' means in Egyptian. Wally because she would sing like a walrus when I would come home. She was the friendliest dog I have ever known. Babies, people, other dogs, cats she loved everyone and everyone loved her back. She would go and do everything with me. My constant companion. On her 10th birthday she looked at me and I heard her say I won't be around much longer. We had that kind of connection. Six months later she got ill. When I found out she only had a couple of weeks left I couldn't bear to leave her home. I would take her to work and sneek her in the back door. We made her a bed and occationally she would wander out to visit with customers. After 2wks. she passed quietly while laying next to me in bed. I know she spared me the pain of having to make the decision to put her down. She was just that special. An Angel. I love and miss you Baboo!
